What is a compounding center?

A compounding center is a company, like NECC, that repackages a drug in a smaller dosage or sells the drug in a different formula that treats a specific condition.  In this instance, the drugs sold to medical providers in the U.S. were an altered or reduced dosage drug that was infected with a fungus.
The compound that was sold by NECC is called methylprednisolone acetate and was sold to 75 clinics in 23 states.

What facilities in Maryland were shipped the fungus contaminate steroids?

As of October 10, 2012, the CDC is reporting that Maryland has had 9 cases of sick patients and 1 death.
If you were a patient of one of these facilities and you received an injection of steroid between May 21, 2012 and October 1, 2012, contact the meningitis steroid lawsuit attorneys at 410-288-2900 for a free consultation.

Where can I find the medical providers that were shipped the infected steroids from NECC?

The CDC has set up a site that provides the names of each facility that received the steroids, follow this link to the CDC Map site.
If you cannot make it to the office, we are able to overnight a packet of information as well as our claim forms that will allow our office to investigate your case and proceed with a lawsuit against the drug manufacturer. Call today for a steroid meningitis lawsuit packet, 410-288-2900.

Who regulates the compounding centers in the U.S..?

The compounding centers in the U.S.. are not overseen by the U.S.. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), instead they are regulated by each state where the compounding center is located.  There are about 3,000 compounding centers in the U.S.., that number has dramatically risen since 2000 when there were virtually none.

What should I do if I believe I received an injection of the infected steroids?

If you believe that you received an injection of the tainted steroids, you should contact your primary healthcare provider as soon as possible and schedule an appointment for a review.  It is now believed that the incubation period may be longer than originally thought.  The experts are saying that that is may take 6 to 42 days for signs of the infection to present itself.

How many vials of the steroid were shipped?

It is estimated by NECC that it shipped 17,676 vials of the tainted steroid.

Heart Treatments Overused, Study Says - WSJ.com

Heart Treatments Overused, Study Says - WSJ.com: "Outside of heart attacks, doctors are often too quick to use a common $20,000 procedure to treat patients suffering from coronary artery disease, a new study suggests.

About 600,000 angioplasty procedures, which almost always involve placement of a tiny metal tube called a stent, are done in the U.S. each year. Roughly 70% of these procedures are performed on patients suffering symptoms of a heart attack and aren't medically controversial. But the remainder are done on stable patients who are suffering mild symptoms or no symptoms at all. Of those, 50% are deemed appropriate, 38% uncertain and 12% inappropriate, the report says."  Click the link above to learn more or contact our office to schedule a free consultation.  No obligations, you may be entitled to monetary compensation.  No fee if no recovery.

If you received a stent from St. Joseph Medical Center, contact the St. Joseph Stent Lawyer, G. Randolph Rice, Jr., at 410-288-2900.  Receive a free review by our cardiologist of your heart stent procedure and cardiac catheterization.

New study scrutinizes heart stent procedures - latimes.com

New study scrutinizes heart stent procedures - latimes.com: "A new study of more than 500,000 cardiac patients who underwent recent cardiac stent or angioplasty procedures in the United States has found that up to 15 percent were either unnecessary or appeared to be of uncertain medical benefit.

However, nearly all of the procedures performed on cardiac patients experiencing acute symptoms such as a heart attacks appeared to have been medically appropriate, the study found.

About 75,000 cases were labeled as 'inappropriate' or 'uncertain' — almost entirely among the 144,700 patients with nonacute symptoms who underwent the procedures on an elective basis. The cases termed 'inappropriate' made up about 3.5 percent of those studied."
